Regular meditation is one of my personal goals and while I do meditate occasionally, it is far from being a habit. I’m hoping that will change as I’ve started using a meditation app called Headspace. The Headspace app is about helping you complete short 10 minute per day meditations to achieve calm and clarity whenever and wherever in your day you are able to fit it in. The Headspace folks call it the gym membership for the mind and it is proving very popular with the website claiming over 1 million Headspace users.
Headspace is based around the concept of mindfulness, a practice which is becoming more common and popular and is backed up by scientific research. Mindfulness practice is effective at reducing stress and worry, increasing focus and clarify, helping with addictions and much more. Mindfulness promotes greater wellbeing and piece of mind helping to improve your work, relationships and happiness. I am a big fan of mindfulness and think that it is as important as your physical workout. Many of us have high stress jobs and lives, work long hours, are constantly in front of computers and iPads and have forgotten how to ‘switch off’. Mindfulness brings us back to earth and helps us stay grounded.
A nice feature of the Headspace app is that you can buddy up with friends and encourage each other with their meditation practice. You don’t have to go it alone! Meditations can be chosen based on your current mood and lifestyle. The app is free and includes 10 x 10 minute free meditations and you can unlock all meditations by paying a subscription of $7.99 per month for a 12 month subscription. Other subscription options are available depending on the term selected.
