Today I want to write a blog about my own fitness progress and the benefits of participating in fun runs. I did a 6km (3.72 mile) run on the weekend in the Hamilton Round the Bridges event – an annual event that draws around 6000 participants. I’ve done it for the last few years and I usually enter the 12km race and then don’t train enough and switch to the 6km race! This year was no exception – I did a couple of training runs and then popped a rib playing indoor sport and had to ease off on the workouts. Nevertheless my goal for the race this year was to beat my race time from last year. Every year I strive to beat my previous time – it’s good to have goals like this to keep oneself motivated!
So how did I do? My time was 34:07 and I came 23rd out of 153 participants in my age group (top 15%) so I’m pretty happy with that. I was in place 111 for gender and place 149 overall which was also a good achievement.
Below are my times for this year compared to the last 3 years. As you can see I have been improving year on year and I look forward to this event every year as I know I have to lift my game to beat last years time!
|Year||Time||Overall Place||Gender Place||Division Place|
I felt good running after the run this year and I attribute that to the lifestyle changes I have made in the last few months. I have written about those lifestyle changes in earlier blogs. Yoga has helped with my muscle stretching and recovery, my general fitness has improved through gym work and I am several kilograms lighter than last year.
These fun run events really are just that – great fun and a great social event to do with your friends or family. Most big cities host fun runs so I encourage you to find what’s happening in your area and sign up. Warning – these races can be addictive! Before you know it you’ll be doing a half marathon! I ran the Sydney Half Marathon back in 2006. I’m not a passionate runner but I find that when I enter these events I find the motivation to do the training. I’d love to read your comments about your running experiences below!
